During the Elizabethan and Jacobean period, public opinion in England was kept informed of the political situation in France, by pamphlets originally published in France and translated into English. Not as regular as newsletters, nor as substantial as books, these occasional pamphlets nevertheless answered a growing need for news from abroad. The article examines the nature of these pamphlets and the role played by the translators and publishers in shaping English views of French politics. Two periods of publication are analysed and compared, centered around famous political murders: the murder of the Guise brothers, followed by the assassination of Henri III (1588-1589) and the assassination of Concini in 1617.
