At the end of the seventeenth century, as is well known, Louis XIV sent to Siam two groups of Jesuits with a scientific mission in astronomy, under the supervision of the French Academy of Science. In fact, however, the first western astronomic observations in Siam were made a few years before the French embassies by another Jesuit of Belgian origin named Antoine Thomas. His observations made in Siam in 1681-1682 were entirely in line with the French Academy of Science project of reforming geography by using astronomic methods. He thus tried to determine the latitude and longitude of the town of Ayutthaya with the methods then available in France and sent a report which was used by the French Academy of Science.
