The heavy increase in Summer l'ryness on the Iberian Peninsula between parallels 43° and 40e cannot be solely explained by the expansion of the anticyclonic subidence of the Azores over occidental Europe. It results from the interaction fo elements of the atmospheric circulation on a zonal scale, and of geographical factors, such as the screen of mountains and the présence of a layer of hot air above the peninsula.
