The ten-year period 1981-91 is characterized by an increase in the contrast between regions, with the must favoired areas being Madrid and the Mediterranean coastal strip between Alicante and Gerona. The difference between birth -and death- rates has fallen to a minimum, with a clear distinction between the northern half of Spain (where the rates are still positive, but showing a rapid decline). The total figures for employment-related migrations for the period 1981-86 show a tendency that reverses the 1960-75 trend : negative in the major industrial centres (Catalonia, Basque Country, Madrid, Valencia), whereas areas formerly marked by emigration show an influx of returning immigrants.
