Relationship between winter precipitation variability and the variations of the geopotential heights at 700 hPa are studied here to determine the patterns of the atmospheric circulation related to drought. A PCA (Principal Components Analysis) is applied to summarize and express precipitation and geopotential variability with few variables. The study shows that drought is linked with a positive state of the NEAO (North East Atlantic Oscillation), EA (East Atlantic) et AM (Africo- Mediterranean) patterns. These anomalies indicate anticyclonic situations over Morocco. The occurrence of NEAO is the most responsible factor of the drought.
