This paper outlines the evolution of the population of Yugoslavia from 1948 to 1991 but it lays a special emphasis on the latest inter censal period (1981- 1991) during which the attraction of towns decreased, as it is succested by the incomplete data we have, because an economic stagnation followed the previous growth after 1980. All the maps describing the demographic growth and the distribution of development levels show sharp contrasts between republic and provinces and between communities as well according to the 1991 census, the total population (22 040 000 inhabitants) increased with a slower rate after 1981 than it did previously, and slower than expected according to the natural rate of increase.
