The building history of Ostia in the late Republican period seems to reflect faithfully the development of the port, in its function of supplying foodstuffs to Rome. Fragmentary epigraphs found in the area of the sanctuary of Via della Foce perhaps permit connecting two of the monumental Temples (of Asclepius and of Hercules) with the Ostian quaestorship of Saturninus and with the dominion that the tribune exercised on the annona in the last years of the second century B.C.
