Farewell to the soviet canon The culture of the Soviet period can be compared with a huge mountain massif which gives you an oppressive feeling if you stay very close to it. Only from a certain distance can you get an overview on the landscape. The fact that up to now no comprehensive history of Russian literature of the 20th century exists, seems to show that we are still close to the Soviet era. When we try to write a history of Russian literature the canon of Socialist Realism which has disrupted the 'normal' évolution of literature in Russia cannot be simply ignored because it functions as a background for many works of literature.
