If we know about armaments in Nantes at the end of the Ancien Regime, the same can hardly be said for shipping circles. The evolution of the Galland family (end XVIIIe to end XIXe) shows the importance of the slave trade as a means of climbing the social ladder in an industrious world, representative of the growing bourgeois class, but rooted in the past through its desires. We can therefore understand better the frequency of this change from innovation to preservation in the rade in Nantes.Si l'armement nantais de la fin de l'Ancien Régime est bien connu, le milieu maritime ne l'est guère. L'évolution de la famille Galland (fins XVIIIe-XIXe) montre l'importance de la traite comme moyen d'ascension sociale au sein d'un monde laborieux, représentatif de la bourgeoisie montante, mais enraciné dans le passé par ses aspirations.
