Interprétation symbolique et interprétation religieuse en archéologie. L’exemple du taureau à Çatal Höyük

Abstract: The present paper takes the bull of Çatal Höyük as an example to propose some methodological points for the interpretation of iconographic representations in non-literate societies. It emphasizes first the difference between deciphering the symbolism of sculptures or paintings and reconstruction of the religious beliefs which these representations are supposed to illustrate. It argues then that differences in height or position between beings shown in pictures are related to hierarchy only inside a single unit of representation. It maintains, taking again many critics formulated against Mellaart’s interpretation, that the bull is always in a dominating position. There are no data to support the idea of the bull as a god. Rather, bovines are the main animals to be sacrificed throughout the history of the Near East. The article presents several arguments to show that best interpretation of bucrania and bull horns present in the main rooms of Çatal Höyük is to understand them as remains of sacrifices. Comparative ethnographic data support this interpretation.Résumé: Cet article prend l’exemple du taureau à Çatal Höyük pour avancer quelques points de méthode dans l’interprétation de l’iconographie des sociétés sans écriture. Il souligne d’abord la différence entre le déchiffrement du symbolisme attaché à une représentation plastique et les croyances religieuses que cette représentation est censée illustrer. Il argumente ensuite que des différences de taille ou de positions entre entités représentées ne sont significatives d’une hiérarchie qu’à l’intérieur d’une même unité représentationnelle. Il soutient, reprenant maintes critiques formulées contre la vieille interprétation de J. Mellaart, que le taureau se trouve toujours en position dominée et que rien n’évoque l’idée d’un «dieu-taureau». Le bovin est plutôt l’espèce sacrificielle par excellence, idée qui permet d’interpréter bucranes et massacres déposés dans les pièces principales comme restes sacrificiels. Cette interprétation est illustrée par quelques données comparatives prises dans l’ethnographie des peuples actuels.Testart Alain.
