The present article compares, on the one hand, Hegel's philosophy of Subjective Spirit and Objective Spirit to the psychology and ethics of Schleiermacher, and on the other hand Hegel's philosophy of Absolute Spirit to Schleiermacher' s conception of art, religion, and dialectic. Both authors seek to express the totality of human activity as the self-manifestation of Spirit. However, instead of arranging the different spiritual domains hierarchically as different moments in a teleological process which overcomes their limits, culminating in one supreme negative identity, as does the Hegelian system, Schleiermacher's system, without either base or final summit, grasps these spiritual domains as a constellation of spheres possessing the same ...
