The tertiary sector, especially health services and public employment, has provided numerous jobs in Limousin since 1960. In 1987, Limousin produced 8,4 public jobs for 100 inhabitants, while the average number in France was 7,9 ; public services held 1 job out of 4. State is now the first employer in Limousin but is not creating any new jobs ; the smaller local branches go on creating jobs, but these mainly cause towns to grows. As a rule, remote rural districts lose their services, but the health and social sectors allow some areas to have a ratio of public jobs per inhabitant fairly similar to that of towns.
