By way of introduction to a problem little known to French-speakers in general, namely the analytical philosophy of art, this article sets out two diverging theses by analytical philosophers on the question of the definition of art. There then follows a critical examination of the first thesis (the impossibility of the definition) defended by Weitz, in the perspective of his use of the teaching of Wittgenstein. Finally, some questions are raised in regard to the second thesis, defended by Dickie, on the possible presuppositions (in the transcendantal order) of a definition of art in terms of institution (the artworld) and of conventions.
