ABSTRACT The enormous increase of tourism in France since the Second World War has become a major conflicting factor in coastal use, although its pressure varies according to places. Its impact means an ever growing hunger of natural and agricultural space, discrepancies in balance between former and new activities, and deep social and professional mutations. Delays in effective control of land use, deficiencies in regulations, conflicts between local authorities and general interests lead to more and more difficult relations between tourism and other coastal activities. A rational management would need drastic national regulations, although adapted to different regional situations. A planned law on French coasts could be a key to the diff...
