To enter upon the urban phenomenon, we should analyse the image of the town. It's absolutely necessary when, as it does in Chartres, this image forces attention by its exceptionnal evidence and strength. The urban image may be observed on two scales and by two attitudes. The external one is worked out by the play of visual relations between the urban signal (the cathedral) and the nearly country (Beauce) or the town (Chartres). It suggests complementarity, harmony, domination. The internal one rises when we stroll about from the low town to the cathedral. It expresses order, life and cohesion of the human community.
