Until 1960 or 1965 the Poitou-Charentes has been a leading agricultural economy area in which industrial employment and the tertiary sector were only representing a reduced position. In 1962 agriculture still included 38,6 p.c. of the active population, industry more than 26,3 p.c. and services 35,1 p.c. In this rural area the modernization occured in the seventies ; industrial decentralization, urbanization, quick progression of wage earners and white collars were the main components of this change. Today the primary sector does'nt reach more than 16,2 p.c, facing 30,7 p.c. for industry and 53,1 p.c. for tertiary jobs. But economic crisis throws also into disorder employment structures.
