Employment and mobility in the former border zone between East and West Germany The border between the two German states affected neighboring areas for forty years. Socioeconomic and demographic factors have shaped the reorganization of these areas since the border has come down. The spatial reorganization of the labor market and of unemployment involves several processes: an unfavorable demographic trend, a " selective front of integration" the emergence of new "centralities", and the strong heterogeneity of areas along the border.
