Twelve years after German reunification, the East German economy still does not resemble Rhineland capitalism. Instead of the strong West German Mittelstand, there are fragile microcompanies; instead of export-champions, firms dependent on local markets and orders for their goods and services from the state; instead of a large, competitive industrial sector, a very small one. The transfer of West German formal institutions did not led to a replication of the West German capitalism. To understand why, the institutional transfer - a key factor in East Germany's emergence from Socialism - must be placed in a multilevel theoretical framework for grasping its impact on the economy and especially on organizational dynamism.
