"These drawings investigate accumulation, time (duration), gesture, intimacy and the trace of hand as artefact. They enquire into the relationship between the 1960s sculptural and pictorial Minimalist legacy and a female craft tradition, asking in what ways the non-objective tradition can encompass ideas of absorption, the intimate and domestic. Such questions intersect with the curator Isabel Carlos' Biennale themes of rationality and emotional intelligence. Eskdale's fine line drawings embody a continuous mapping of time and thought over several years, an accumulation of memory that is echoed by the viewer's experience across the sequence of works.<br /><br />The series develops from a tradition encompassing the work of Agnes Martin and Anni Albers, from abstraction to craft and design. It also links to drawing and installation practices discussed by theorists such as Pamela Lee, 1999, Some Kinds of Duration: The Temporality of Drawing as Process Art, After lmage, Drawing Through Process.<br />The series was one of the works by 51 artists from 32 countries. ""The theme, On Reason and Emotion, emerged from my reading of a thought-provoking book called Descartes' Error by Antonio Damásio."" ""Damásio analyses a number of neurological case studies to show that emotion is crucial to human intelligence. Rather than the restrictions of the traditional cogito (I think therefore I am), one can now say 'I feel therefore I am'."" (Carlos) <br /><br />Eskdale's survey of drawings (2000-04) was shown in a gallery with surveys of works by Portuguese artist Helena Almeida (1997-03) and Australian Pat Brassington (1999-04). This enabled a consideration of how themes have developed in these artists' practices. Each artist shares a concern with the graphic trace enacted by the gendered female body where the domestic body itself is the ground of practice.<br />The artist was included in a DVD of collected interviews and presented a lecture on her work at the Gallery.
