Reconstruction of the political landscape of East Germany post-1989. The problems involved in the building of a democratic régime, and transition to a market economy, are certainly not specific to East Germany, but their special nature is to be closely bound up with the problems of German reunification. The GDR moved from one camp to the other more speedily than all the other countries of Central and Eastern Europe. It underwent transition to a market economy, and the most violent political reforms without the benefit of any degree of gradualism to alleviate the violence of the shock engendered by economic stabilization measures and political changes.
