Superpower cooperation in Eastern Europe At least by the middle to end of the 1950s there emerged in Europe a stable security regime consisting of two political-military blocs. Despite much rhetorical posturing and periodic increases in political tension, the security regime brought peace and substantial political stability to Europe for almost four decades. The essay focuses on the competitive-cooperative relationship between the superpowers in Eastern Europe and is divided into four major sections. The first examines the nature of the interests of both the Soviet Union and the United States in the region. The second part traces the evolution of the East European security regime.
