Corporate social responsibility in the Australian construction industry

The construction process, right through from planning and design to use and demolition, has a major impact on society. Initially, concern was focussed on its environmental impact and the quest for sustainability, but this has now extended into the wider remit of corporate social responsibilty (CSR). This involves business acknowledging the expectations of society and acting on behalf of all stakeholders. It essentially means that business must act (voluntarily) in a socially ethical manner by developing policy that encompasses the core principles enshrined by CSR. Unlike several otehr EU countries (notably France, Denmark and the Netherlands), the UK has yet to passlaws requiring firms to report on social and environmental issues.
