Important concepts of adsorption science, such as excess and absolute adsorption isotherms and adsorption space volume, are critically analyzed and their status is discussed. An adequate method is proposed for evaluating the adsorption volume of solid adsorbents having arbitrary structures from excess adsorption isotherms. The method is tested by the example of five adsorption systems examined at a wide range of equilibrium pressures
