Political Aspects of Economie Reforms in Eastern Europe. The purpose of this paper is to examine economic reforms in Eastern Europe primarily as a political rather than an economic phenomenon. The reforms themselves are analyzed from two points of view: as a dependent variable or as the end-product of a series of political, economic, and social processes taking place in several East European countries, and as an independent variable or as a major component in the process of political change and modernization.
