Categorization processes and typicality in 8-to-12 year-olds A systematic comparison of categorization processes with natural objects and artifacts has been carried out on subjects aged 8 to 12. The objects belonged to categories which varied systematically along a typicality gradient. The subjects performed a categorization task in the form of « an X is an Y », decision time being the dependant variable. We assume that the time to answer about the categories of artifacts is slower than that of natural objects, because the young children 's knowledge of living objects exceeds their knowledge of artifacts.
