48 children (boys and girls) between 2 and 5 years were recorded in free-play conversations with their mothers at home. The children were from middle to upper social classes. The samples of speech recorded were transcribed and analyzed for a number of lexical and morphosyntactical indices (MLU, IDL, syntactic complexity, and the like). The correlations computed between the speech measured confirm the interested of MLU as an single index of language development in young children. Reliability measures were also made. It appears that 50 utterances is a sample of speech large enough to compute MLU reliably where as at least 75 utterances are necessary for others lexical and syntactical indices.L'article fournit une série de points de référence...
