A reinterpretation of several studies in the maternal linguistic environment of language-learning mentally retarded children is presented as well as some original data on the same subject. It is concluded that maternal speech to the retarded child is not improverished or otherwize deficient as was claimed by several authors on the basis of an improper interpretation of their findings. On the contrary, maternal speech to the retarded child appears to be appropriate in all respects for language development. This is not to mean that it is not possible nor desirable to improve the efficiency of maternal speech for faster language development within the retarded child. Several recent approaches in that direction are discussed.L'article ré-interp...
