La construction des notions spatiales chez les enfants intellectuellement précoces, âgés de 6 à 8 ans

This article presents a study of how the field of space is structured by intellectually gifted children, characterized by the rapidity of the general rhythm with which they build up knowledge, which may, however, at critical moments of the genesis, present a certain discord within the organization of their potentialities. This study comes within the theo- rical framework of the development of intelligence according to Piaget. Firstly, «Gifted » children, aged 6, and « average » children of the same mental age (aged 8) were compared. The tasks presented required miscellaneous notions of space (the building of the horizontal plane, perspective, the coordination of points of view). The same subjects were examined for the second time after a period of two years. The results were assessed by the transversal and the longitudinal methods. The construction of spatial notions was compared with other notional fields already studied (conservations, classification, seria- tion). An inter-group variability of achievements appeared according to the levels of development of subjects and a intra-individual variability, in gifted children in particular, according to the different fields of knowledge considered. These results are discussed, taking into account the task caracteristics (type of reasoning they require) and fonctional specificities of compared subjects (type of privileged processing, capacity of transfer, efficiency of inhibition and arousal process of schémas...).Cet article propose une étude de la structuration du champ spatial chez des enfants intellectuellement précoces, caractérisés en général par un rythme rapide de construction des connaissances mais pouvant présenter, à certains moments sensibles de la genèse, des aspects dysharmoniques au sein de leurs potentialités. Cette recherche s'inscrit dans le cadre théorique du développement de l'intelligence selon Piaget. Des enfants « précoces », âgés de 6 ans, et des enfants « moyens » d'âge mental équivalent (8 ans) ont d'abord été comparés. Les épreuves présentées sollicitent diverses notions spatiales (la construction de l'horizontale, de la perspective, la coordination des points de vue). Les mêmes échantillons de sujets ont été examinés pour la seconde fois deux années plus tard. Les résultats sont appréhendés par la méthode transversale et par la méthode longitudinale. La construction des notions spatiales est comparée à celle d'autres domaines notionnels déjà étudiés (conservations, classification, sériation). Il apparaît une variabilité intergroupes des performances en fonction des niveaux de développement des sujets ainsi qu'une variabilité intr a-individuelle, chez les précoces, en particulier, en fonction des domaines de connaissances envisagés. Ces résultats sont discutés en prenant en considération les caractéristiques des tâches proposées (le type de raisonnement qu'elles imposent) et les spécificités fonctionnelles des sujets comparés (mode de traitement privilégié, capacités de transfert d'un mode de réponse, efficacité des processus d'inhibition et d'activation de schemes...).Planche Pascale.
