Based on previous research in primatology and cognitive developmental psychology, an experimental game situation was developed involving the childs deployment of deceptive strategies so as not to reveal the location of a hidden object. Sixty children from 3,4 to 8,7 years of age were filmed during three consecutive trials. Videotapes were subsequently analyzed for four dependent variables : 1 / rate of successful deception by the child of the adulte confederate; 2 / rate of nonverbal leakage; 3 / complexity of deception strategy; and 4 / use of an inpredictable hiding strategy across the trials.
