An intentional free paced learning task is given to normal and retarded children. In the first experiment, the Ss are presented with arbitrary pairs of unrelated words, whereas in the second experiment the list consists of paradigmatic and syntagmatic associated words. The Ss are instructed to learn each list as long as they think they are able to give a perfect upcoming recall. Ss study each pair as many times and as long as they wish, only constrained by the serial order of the items through the list. When Ss feel they know, they stop their study and a recall task is given. Study times for each pair at each cycle are recorded. The learning task goes on up to a perfect recall criterion. Regulation mecanisms of the study activity are prese...
