The social play of five-year-old boys and girls was compared as a function of play setting (indoor vs. outdoor). Participants were 124 kindergarten pupils. Both social and cognitive aspects of play were studied using a structured observation system adapted from Parten (1932) and Smilansky (1968). Subjects were observed during indoor (forty min.) and outdoor (twenty min.) free play for a total of sixty min. per subject. Results confirmed that girls preferred to play in pairs whist boys played in larger groups, especially during outdoor play.
