The acquisition of the system ofsemic oppositions between the French spatial prepositions : au-dessus de, en dessous de, sous and sur, was investigated using the clinical method of interviews in a context of object manipulation. 144 children of 3 years to 8 years were examined, as well as a control group of 50 adults. The results indicate that there are three stages in this acquisition, concerning both comprehension and production. The child first masters the [superativity] / [infrativity] opposition, dominant in adult linguistic structure.
