The internal coherence and external validity of friendship choices were examined among three, four and five years old children using sociometric peer nomination, paired comparison preference techniques, and observational measures of free play activity. Interviews centered upon three different social contexts: play with best friends, personal proximity, and sharing with peers. Results showed a significant developmental increase in the coherence of verbal reports on peer friendships. However, the generality of these choices varied as a function of both age and sex of subjects. Although girls were more consistent in the identification of friends at all age levels, boys offered information which more directly predicted their actual associations...
