The problem of the origin of language, a subject which long remained taboo — at least in modern linguistics — , has for some time now been regaining in interest. In this connection Humboldt's theory deserves full attention. And for more than one reason : firstly because numerous contemporary solutions are directly or indirectly inspired by Humboldt; secondly because Humboldt' s theory is perhaps historically the first to put forward an authentically philosophical reply to a question which no doubt no longer appertains to linguistics alone.
