Machine Translation in the former Soviet Union and in the Newly Independent States (NIS)

abstract : More than forty years separate us from the advent of the first American and Soviet MT experiments and publications devoted to the analysis of the NLP problems. It is hardly possible to find another scientific field which has faced such dramatic upheavals. It is enough to mention the powerful reverberation of the MT ideas at the end of the 1950s — a wave that turned into deep disappointment in the mid- sixties, then again an increase in the number of MT projects in the 1970s and the emergence of new ideas in the eighties, followed by the financial crisis of the nineties.RÉSUMÉ : II y a plus de quarante ans maintenant qu'ont eu lieu les premières expériences et publications américaines et soviétiques consacrées à l'analyse des problèmes de traitement automatique du langage naturel. Il est certainement impossible de trouver un autre domaine qui ait eu à faire face à des bouleversements aussi dramatiques.
