abstract : This article is a parallel study of the first two French grammars of the Wolof language (Senegal) written in the 19th C, respectively by J. Dard (1826) and J.-F. Roger (1829). The analysis of their motivations, their references, their questions and their solutions shows their respective contribution to the knowledge of the Wolof language as well as to the constitution of linguistic knowledge on African languages in general. Dard founds his work on the principles of general grammar, while Roger, more modem, uses in turn Beauzée's Grammaire générale, the grammar of the ideologist Destutt de Tracy and Silvestre de Sacy's Grammaire arabe.
