abstract : The empirical discovery of the African languages began in the 15th century as the Portuguese progressively explored the coasts of Africa. It gave rise to a strategy of interpretation, to the teaching of Portuguese to the Africans, to a geographical survey of the languages and to an empirical comparatist activity. In the 17th century, in a limited area (Angola), two Bantu languages, Kikongo and Kimbundu, were involved in a double « technological revolution » : the transfer of the Latin alphabet to the African languages and the writing of the first lexicons and grammars.
