England was one of the first European countries where the vernacular was used for literary purposes. The study of Latin, however, dominated the formation of the Anglo-Saxon grammatical tradition. Aelfric's famous grammar (ca 1000), is an Old English adaptation of and existing grammar, the Exceptiones de Prisciano. No description of Old English is to be found in this text ; the vernacular forms presented alongside the Latin paradigms only serve to illustrate the latter. One will naturally find a grammatical terminology in English, which, on the whole, derives from previous glosses.
