Ireland is the seat of the emergence of an original grammatical reflection, which first concerned Latin (hiberno-latin grammars and vernacular glosses) and then Irish (Auraicept na nÉces, 7th century). The bardic treatises marked a significant renewal of this tradition. In the 17th Century Irish franciscans exiled on the continent wrote and published grammars to ensure the exiled Irish priests would not forget their language. Brythonic glosses are found in the 8th and 9th century, but the first printed grammars of this language came from cultured minds open to the new trends of the Renaissance.
