ABSTRACT : French-Spanish dictionaries have their original roots in the language teaching handbooks of the Renaissance, in which latin sometimes served as a metalanguage. For almost 200 years after Liano/Ledel's work (1565), there will appear no more Spanish works on the language of the country's immediate neighbours. The flemisch Hornkens must be credited with the inaugural work in the series of Franco-Spanish dictionaries (1599), but the classical work is Oudin's (1607).
