La métaphore et le problème central de l'herméneutique

Metaphor and the central problem of hermeneutics. The aim of this essay is to connect the hermeneutical problems raised by text-interpretation with the semantic problems raised by metaphor-understanding. This connection demands that metaphor be considered as a kind of statement, and not merely as a change in the meaning of words. Thus reinserted into the framework of the discourse, metaphorical statements raise problems similar to those raised by the understanding of poetical texts. The relation between the two is reciprocal. On the one hand, the explanation of metaphor offers a good model for that of a poetical text : the metaphorical statement is in fact a kind of enigma which calls for the invention of a meaning capable of allowing normally incompatible terms to make sense together. On the other hand, the interpretation of a poem is a model for that of metaphor : if to interpret a poem is to unfold the « world » which the work implies as its « poetic project », the fundamental question for an hermeneutic of metaphor would be to disentangle the « poetic project » to which metaphorical statements are subordinated.Le but de cet essai est de relier les problèmes posés en herméneutique par l'interprétation des textes et les problèmes posés en sémantique par la métaphore. Le rapprochement exige au préalable que la métaphore soit traitée comme une sorte d'énoncé et non comme un écart du sens des mots. Ainsi replacé dans le cadre du discours, l'énoncé métaphorique pose des problèmes semblables à ceux que pose l'intelligence d'un texte poétique. Le rapport est mutuel. D'un côté, l'explication de la métaphore est un modèle pour l'explication du texte poétique : l'énoncé métaphorique est, en effet, une énigme qui appelle l'invention d'un sens capable de faire tenir ensemble des termes souvent incompatibles. D'un autre côté, l'interprétation du poème est un modèle pour celle de la métaphore : si, en effet, la tâche de l'interprétation est de déployer le « monde » que l'œuvre enveloppe comme son « projet poétique», la question fondamentale d'une herméneutique de la métaphore est de dégager le projet poétique auquel sont subordonnés les énoncés métaphoriques.Ricœur Paul.
