Meteosat satellite pictures ; their contribution to the knowledge of the influence of islands on cloud formations : the example of the Canary Islands. In the Atlantic Ocean, the Canary Islands frequently disturb the normal course of the trade wind. The lee waves develop over long distances. In the visible image from the Satellite Meteosat, on the 9th of May, 1979, three sectors can be distinguished around the islands : the sea of clouds on the windward side, the subsidence immediately on the leeward side, and waves of a rotor type beyond.
