In Limousin the agricultural area covers 56,2 % of the ground ; in France as a whole, it covers 60,8 % of it ; woods and forests spread over 30,5 % of the region. Agriculture and forest output are key departments in the economy of Limousin. The growing of grass and fodder-plants is becoming a typical feature of the local agricultural area and leads to a decline in the culture of cereals. The number of farms decreased by 29,7 % between 1955 and 1967, mostly meaning the disappearing of small holdings ; about 57 % of the farms have now 10 to 50 ha (i.e. 25 to 123 acres).
