La production agricole du Limousin

In Limousin the agricultural area covers 56,2 % of the ground ; in France as a whole, it covers 60,8 % of it ; woods and forests spread over 30,5 % of the region. Agriculture and forest output are key departments in the economy of Limousin. The growing of grass and fodder-plants is becoming a typical feature of the local agricultural area and leads to a decline in the culture of cereals. The number of farms decreased by 29,7 % between 1955 and 1967, mostly meaning the disappearing of small holdings ; about 57 % of the farms have now 10 to 50 ha (i.e. 25 to 123 acres). Cattle-breeding is the chief rural occupation ; the cattle-herd holds nearly 4 % of the French herd (and 16 % of the female breeding-stock) ; the sheepflock, which is in full growth, contes up to 10 % of the national production ; pigs make 3 % of the French live-stock. The cattle is mostly bred for its meat. Limousin comes last of the French regions for the gross profit per worker, which might be imputed to the old-fashioned methods in cattle- breeding, to the slow development of cooperation in agriculture, to the poor training of cattle-breeders, as well as to the lack of organization in the trade system.La superficie agricole cultivée couvre, en Limousin, 56,2 % du territoire, contre 60,8 % pour la France entière ; les bois et les forêts occupent 30,5 % de la superficie de la région. L'agriculture et la production forestière sont des secteurs clé de l'économie limousine. Ce sont les cultures fourragères et les superficies toujours en herbe qui caractérisent de plus en plus le territoire agricole régional, de sorte que la culture des céréales est en net déclin. Le nombre des exploitations a diminué de 29,7 % entre 1955 et 1967, entraînant surtout la disparition des petites fermes. Ce sont les exploitations de 10 à 50 ha qui sont les plus nombreuses (57 % de l'ensemble environ). L'élevage est la principale activité rurale du Limousin ; le troupeau bovin possède près de 4 % du troupeau national (et 16 % des femelles reproductrices) ; le troupeau ovin, en plein essor, équivaut à 10 % du troupeau français ; enfin, les porcs représentent 3 % du cheptel national. Le Limousin produit surtout de la viande. Le Limousin occupe la dernière place des régions françaises pour le résultat brut d'exploitation par personne active agricole : ceci semble dû aux méthodes d'élevage périmées, au retard apporté à la coopération agricole et à la formation des éleveurs, ainsi qu'à l'inorganisation des circuits de vente.Bouet Guy.
