SUMMARY Until the beginning of 1967, the interior of Brittany was provided with a narrow-gauge rail network created at the end of the nineteenth century. These installations allowed the region to overcome its isolation, but also contributed in making it an enclave in a country served fundamentally by standard- gauge rail. Having underlined the necessity of converting the rail network in Brittany, dictated by an increasing annual deficit, and having mentioned the proposed solutions, the author indicates that the adopted proposal was that of a single modernised line to ensure the penetration of standard- gauge rail into the heart of the region ; road transport services, complementary to this line, have replaced the other lines.
