The pliocene deposits in the Pays de Retz consist of rubefied sand of marine origin and of pebbles not always showing evidence of wear due to the action of the sea. The sandy material results from the modification of earlier deposits (eocene, cenomanian) and is in great part of local origin. From the beginning, the history of these deposits has not everywhere been the same ; some are the remains of a thin layer resulting from pliocene marine sedimentation which merely followed the lines of the earlier relief ; others have become mixed with « High Normannian » beaches and dunes (La Bernerie) ; others are formed in terraces by marine abrasion (La Sennetière) ; those of the sand and gravel deposits NE of Pornic were formed in fluvio-marine ter...
