In this article, the author summarizes the main results obtained during a 15-year longitudinal study on families who severely neglect their children. The study reveals that children who have been victim of both parental neglect and violence show the most serious profiles in terms of cognitive and social development. Similarly, children who have been exposed to neglect over several years demonstrate more behavioural and emotional problems than children exposed to maltreatment for a temporary period. Children who have been victim of chronic neglect exhibit, in particular, disorganized behaviour that expresses both withdrawal and aggression.
