For the first time a catalogue of animals able to cure themselves was drawn up on chapters 5 and 6 of book IX of Aristotle’s Historia animalium, as a list of facts proving that some animals are intelligent. The theme was afterwards treated again and enriched by paradoxographers and encyclopaedists. It acquired particular strength in the philosophical controversy between advocates and adversaries of the existence of reason in animals.
