In 1996, an archaelogical evaluation was carried out on the rampart of the gallo-roman site of Argentomagus (Saint-Marcel, department of the Indre). The test trench confirmed the presence of a gaulish fortification, a murus gallicus, composed of an earthwork reinforced by internal timber framing, fastened by long iron nails, and by an external stone facing. These findings confirm the function of an oppidum at the site of Argentomagus during La Tène D period. Saint-Marcel is thus the fourth known murus gallicus in the civitas of the Bituriges Cubii and figures among the twenty towns mentionned by Cesar in the de Bello Gallico. This new discovery allows us to place the site of Saint-Marcel within the context of the european oppida cultures.Un...
