Le pharmacien et chimiste Henri Braconnot (Commercy 1780-Nancy 1855)

Pharmacist and chimist Henri Braconnot. Henri Braconnot was born in Commercy in 1780. When he was 13 years old, he was bound apprentice in the pharmacy of Graux in Nancy. He remained here for two years, learning pharmacy, chemistry and botany. When the army called him, his position in Strasbourg allowed him to study. After it, he came to Paris and learned in some schools, particularly the École gratuite de pharmacie. Returned in Nancy, for ever, in 1802, he was then named as the chairman of the botanical garden and a member of the academy of the town, and he began his researchs in plant chemistry. He worked almost until his death that occured in January 1855. Braconnot's work is essentially devoted to chemistry. His name is attached to the extractive principles of vegetables. Some orientations of his researchs are : plant acids, fats, extractive compounds that may have conduct him to alkaloids, sugar obtained from saw-dust and rags, other organic plant chemicals, nitration of cellulose, and some others such as colours chemistry, hydrology, physiological chemistry, toxicology, mineralogy. He was never received as an apothecary, but Pharmacy has always considered that he belonged to it.Henri Braconnot naquit à Commercy en 1780. À l'âge de 13 ans, il est mis en apprentissage chez Graux, apothicaire à Nancy, où il apprend la pharmacie, la chimie et la botanique jusqu'à son appel aux armées. Affecté à Strasbourg, il y perfectionne ses connaissances jusqu'à son licenciement, et se rend alors à Paris où il fréquente différents établlissements d'enseignement dont l'École gratuite de pharmacie. De retour à Nancy, qu'il ne quittera plus, en 1802, il devient directeur du jardin botanique, est élu à l'académie locale et commence ses recherches de chimie végétale qui se poursuivent quasiment jusqu'à son décès, au début de l'année 1855. Braconnot a attaché son nom à l'extraction des principes des végétaux et l'essentiel de ses publications y est consacré. Plusieurs thèmes peuvent être distingués : les acides, les corps gras, les principes extractifs - qui auraient pu le mener à la découverte des alcaloïdes -, le sucre de bois et de chiffon, les constituants végétaux organiques, la nitration de la cellulose. Ses travaux divers sont consacrés aux colorants, à l'analyse des eaux, à la chimie physiologique, à la toxicologie et à la minéralogie. Bien qu'il n'ait jamais été diplômé, la Pharmacie a toujours considéré Braconnot comme l'un des siens.Labrude Pierre, Becq Corinne.
