Les ponts romains de Chalon-sur-Saône

Identified since 1952 by L. Armand-Calliat, the remains of the Roman bridge were the subject of five seasons of subaquatic excavations, devoted to the study of the pile n° 3. The great stages of the building sequence of the pile erected in the beginning of the 3rd century, were individualized. It seems now obvious, that the studied remains in fact belong to the second, or even to a third bridge built on the upstream end of an old fordable passage. The excavations have given more than 150 coins, many tools particularly related to stonework. They have also showed that the pile was put inside a watertight box built, exactly as it was done for the construction of river boats but also sea ships. Two boats, with a flot bottom, dated of the 1st century AD and about 15 m long, have been discovered partly covered with the pile. We are planning these coming years to take them out of the water and to go into their study.Identifiés par L. Armand-Calliat dès 1952, les vestiges du « pont romain » de Chalon ont fait l'objet de cinq campagnes de fouille subaquatique consacrées à l'étude de la pile n° 3. Les grandes étapes de la construction de la pile, édifiée au début du IIIe s. à l'aide de blocs de grès de remploi, ont pu être individualisées. Il apparaît désormais évident que les vestiges étudiés appartiennent en réalité au deuxième, voire même plus probablement à un troisième pont construit au débouché amont d'un ancien passage à gué. La fouille, qui a livré plus de 150 monnaies, a aussi fourni un abondant outillage en relation notamment avec le travail de la pierre ; elle a aussi montré que la pile avait été mise en place à l'intérieur d'un caisson étanche construit selon des principes étroitement apparentés à ceux de la construction navale, à la fois fluviale et maritime. Deux bateaux à fond plat, datés du Ier s. de notre ère et longs d'une quinzaine de mètres, ont été découverts partiellement engagés sous la pile,.
